Four hundred years ago, in 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and a group of plotters attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London with barrels of gunpowder placed in the basement. They wanted to kill King James and the king’s leaders.

When Queen Elisabeth 1st took the throne of England she made some laws against the Roman Catholics. Guy Fawkes was one of a small group of Catholics who felt that the government was treating Roman Catholics unfairly. Cuando la reina Elisabeth 1ª ascendió al trono de Inglaterra aprobó algunas leyes contra los Católicos (debéis saber que en Inglaterra la Iglesia mayoritaria no era la Católica, sino la Anglicana). Guy Fawkes pertenecía a un pequeño grupo de católicos que sentía que el gobierno les trataba injustamente. Esperaban que con el ascenso de James 1º se cambiasen las leyes, pero éste no lo hizo
Catholics had to practise their religion in secret. There were even fines for people who didn't attend the Protestant church on Sunday or on holy days. James lst passed more laws against the Catholics when he became king.

A group of men led by Robert Catesby, plotted to kill King James and blow up the Houses of Parliament, the place where the laws that governed England were made.
Un grupo de hombres liderados por Robert Catesby, conspiraron para asesinar al rey y volar el Parlamento, que era el lugar donde se aprobaban las leyes de Inglaterra
El complot era simple: la siguiente vez que el rey abriese la sesión del Parlamento, volarían a todo el que estuviese allí con pólvora. Los conspiradores compraron una casa al lado del Parlamento. Esta casa tenía una bodega situada bajo el edificio del Parlamento. Planearon poner pólvora bajo la casa y que volase tanto al Parlamento como al rey 
Guy Fawkes was given the job to keep watch over the barrels of gunpowder and to light the fuse. On the morning of 5th November, soldiers discovered Guy hidden in the cellar and arrested him.
A Guy Fawkes le asignaron la tarea de vigilar los barriles de pólvora y encender la mecha. La mañana del 5 de Noviembre, los soldados descubrieron a Guy escondido en la bodega y lo arrestaron.
Guy Fawkes was taken to the Towe of London
He was tortured and questioned about the other plotters. To start with he didn't tell the soldiers anything about the plot. But, eventually he started to tell the truth.
Guy Fawkes fue llevado a la Torre de Londres. Allí le torturaron y le preguntaron acerca de los demás conspiradores. Al principio no dijo nada sobre el complot, pero finalmente empezó a contar la verdad. In celebration of his survival, King James ordered that the people of England should have a great bonfire on the night on 5th November. The event is still commemorated annually in England on 5th November by fireworks and burning 'guys'(effigies) on bonfires.
Para celebrar que había sobrevivido, el rey James ordenó que el pueblo de Inglaterra debería encender una gran hoguera la noche del 5 de Noviembre. el evento se sigue conmemorando en Inglaterra cada año el 5 de Noviembre con fuegos artificiales y la quema de monigotes representando a Guy Fawkes
